I have a 76 F-100 4x4 360 that starts and runs fine until it is parked after a run. Then it runs for up to three of four minutes at idle and then flat shuts down and will not start until much later (usually hours) then it will start and run as long as you don't idle for more than a few minutes.Any ideas as to what the problem is will be greatly appreciated.

You need to figure out if it's a fuel or spark problem.
When it takes a fit and won't start, pull the aircleaner off and while looking down the carb throat, push the accelerator linkage back. You should see two strong streams of gas flow into the engine. If not, you have a fuel problem.
If that looks good, take a sparkplug wire off, and stick a screwdriver up inside the wire. Hold the plastic handle of the screwdriver, and put the metal shank close to something metal on the engine. When somebody cranks the engine for you, you should see a strong blue spark jump from the screwdriver. If not, you have an ignition problem.
No,it's the Ford electronic with the box on the inner fender. All my other trucks were the points and I changed them all to Petronix Ignition.I have not ever worked on the Ford electronic ignition yet.
Well it seems that once I got it started again and let it idle for about five minutes it died again. So I checked for spark and have plenty, then I check to see if I have fuel and I have none.So I figure there is enough fuel draw at higher rpm to keep it running and when it is setting and idling there is no draw at all.So when the truck is stopped and left to idle it runs all the fuel out of the carb and eventually runs itself out of gas. Thanks for all the help.
f100guy is referring to the fuel pump and that it may have a damaged diaphram, which will let gas leak into the engine. Your truck is pretty old, so some gas tank and fuel line work may be in order too if the simple stuff doesn't fix it(fuel filter, fuel pump).
Thanks F-100 guy and Dave,I just went out and checked the oil level and lo and behold there is an extra quart and a half of oil (gas) in the engine.I have never heard of a fuel pump pushing so much gas into the engine before.I smell a lot of raw gas in the oil, thanks again for the heads up,probably saved me a lot of misery.
