Limited slip slipping...

Did a search, but couldn't find what I need. My 86 Dana60 ls has quit working (traction wise). All I can afford right now is maybe change the fluid. Any suggestions on the best to use. I know it has to be "friction modifier(?)"
Thanks, Dave

I would think the old dirty fluid would help keep it working better than the new fluid. New fluid will be clean and slick where as the old fluid with the grit can still help the unit grab a little. So I think it will work less if you change the fluid.

I forget if the Dana 60 uses limited slip additive to increase or decrease friction. Ther are two kinds of axles and the both use the additive but for opposite reasons.

Maybe a fluid change without additive would work. If that does try adding the additive, usually 16 oz.

You could try some aftermarket differential fixer upper, I don't know any particular brand but they always have some kind of bandaid for everything on a car. Maybe Lucas?

I am taking slightly educated guesses here, but since you don't want to spend money it limits the options. With your year, I would guess you have a lot of miles and need a rebuild, but that can be expensive.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

It's a 6.9 diesel with 310,00 miles so yeah, a rebuild is probably in the future. just didn't want to damage anything important.
thanks for the replies.

A rebuild kit is available for about 60 bucks I believe...just new clutches will get her working like new again.
