I have a 2000 f150 4x4 with a 5.4 liter engine. it takes a long time to warm up. are these engines slow to warm up? It seems to take longer than last winter. I think it will need a new thermostat but I would like to know it they are slower than normal. This is the best Ford I have ever owned. I had Ford mustangs and cougars in the past (swore I would never own another Ford but they make a one hell of a truck) and all ...I mean all of them had cooling problems. signed.. cold in Wisconsin.
Same here. My 2003 Screw takes a long time to warm up. We got our 1st noticable snow here in Missouri. I drove about 7 miles (for my morning coffee). It had just started to warm-up. That's after letting it idle for 5 minutes while I cleaned the windshield.
sounds identical to mine. But it should'nt take that long. the engine must be circulating the coolant through the radiator. bet we both need thermostats or at least cardboard in front of the radiator
Besides replacing the thermostat which is probably a good idea, you might want to look into a winter front for the truck. You can get the kind that snaps into the grille and looks pretty good.
Mine is up to normal temp in about 4 miles. My engine must still be good and tight along with a good thermostat. 34,000 miles.
Now my old 460 is another story. It has a lot more cast iron to heat.

My Ford truck experience goes back quite aways and I've always noticed the Ford to be cold blooded, although Ford has gotten a little better with quicker heat up. I'd say it's a typical Ford, unless it is an obvious Looooooooong time then I would say thermostat. Yah... what they said.
I changed the thermostate in my '01 F150 and it did some good... where is the temp guage at its max now? If it's close to the 1/4 line I would look to changin the stat.

My 02 F150 (5.4) is kicking out heat within 1-2 miles on a wintery michigan day without any previous warming up. This is the fastest 'heating up' engine i have ever owned. No complaints here!
Sounds like you may need a thermostat. Make sure your temperature control **** is actually functioning properly when turned to the red.
My cougar is guilty of slow, cool heat. A thermostat is probally all that it needs.
