1998 explorer transmission info
I want to buy an electronic shift improver for my 98 explorer. its the 4.0 ohc model (205hp model). I dont know the transmission part number and cant find any info on the kit. anyone know where to go, and if its the electronic one?

Both the V6 used the 5R55E
If you do nothing else on this, drop the pan and tighten the VB bolts. Unlike previous versions these get loose. Only a light twist, 9 ft-lb. If your interested there is a cast aluminum tranny pan that will be available in Feb from www.yourcovers.com for the 4WD. 2WD available now, they didn't know the 4WD was deeper.

i was looking for the tranny online, and it calls that model a 5 speed. Hers is a 4 speed. I would swear thats what it is anyway. It's the eddie bauer 2wd model. I guess i have to look in the owners manual now to be sure....
how about the 4r55E model, could that be it?

yeah its definitely at 1998, i'm gonna go to the owners manual and also check vin number codes. Thats so wierd, i always thought it was 4 speeds, and it shifts so crappy that you dont feel it anyways

Put it in manual low and point it down hill. See if you have engine brakeing. I have 145K with no problems. I have a spare 99 transmission that had the gasket blown out, for parts. Don't think I will ever need it. Expect to go well over 200K with it. Added cooler, remote filter, tightened VB bolts, and this spring will get the larger pan. Check with the dealer, there are improved seperator plates for some. I can't argue with what works.
