I've got an '87 F150 with 302 and AOD. The problem I'm having is my tranny seems to bog down after upshifting. It acts like a manual transmission that is in too high of a gear. Once the rpms come up it runs fine. It's just when the rpms are low after upshifting. I'm wondering if this might be related to the torque converter, old fluid, or what else? I bought the truck about 3 months ago and don't really know the history of it. Can I change the fluid myself, or do I need to take it somewhere for a "flush". I don't know the miles but lets assume more than 125,000.
Sounds like the TV cable might be out of adjustment. Search the sight and you will find links to the subject. You should be able to change the fluid and filter yourself. Drain the torque converter while you are at it. A decent public library will have nice manuals to get specifics for your truck.
I have adjusted the TV cable once before. It changed the way the truck shifted, but didn't cure my problem. I'll try to adjust it again. Does the vehicle speed sensor have any effect on the tranny shifting gears. I have been getting a code 29 for low signal from vss. Also, how do I drain the torque converter?
There are no electronics in the AOD transmission, so the speed sensor will have no effect.
Remove the access cover at the bottom front of the transmission. Rotate the motor til the drain plug comes to the bottom where you can reach it.
If you are adjusting the tv cable with a pressure gauge attached to the transmission, set tv pressure at about 40lbs. This will have the effect of setting the shift points a little bit higher than normal and allow the engine to run at a little higher rpm.
