How does it get in there?

Since a well known rust place is the cab floor support channel that is under the seat and it rust close to the door. I decided to check mine out since I am finding more and more putty under the "restored" paint. the metal is soft when you hit it with a hammer and it was FULL OF DIRT & RUST!!! How did it get in there????? I drilled a hole in the bottom and poked a screwdriver in there to get it out.

There are a couple places Ford should have put drain holes and didn't. The floor support that you mentined and the radiator core support. Everyone should take the time to drill at least a 1/2" hole in these locations.
My 66 came from New Mexico and is nearly rust-free. I drilled the floor supports and you wouldn't believe the amount of sand that poured out. If left in there, it would collect moisture and slowly eat away at the metal. Want to preserve as much of this truck as possible.

If you look closer near the center of the support, you will see the brace does not quite make contact with the sheet metal. The dirt gets in there and water and wind help push it towards the ends. When it dries, it clogs the ends near the sills and there you are.
Drill the holes and run water in there with your screwdriver or a piece of bailing wire to loosen up the crud.

Hey Truckfarmer,
Where exactly should I drill the extra drain holes? My '65 is totally rust-free and I want to keep it that way. Any other problem locations that I shoud look out for?
thanks

I drilled a 1/2" hole near the joint where the support meets the rocker panel. Also poke a stiff wire up inside to help clean out the dirt accumilated in there.
