Checking timing on 96 460
I asked this over in the big block section and it was suggested that i post it here. I have a 1996 F-250 with a 460. It has pinging problems with lower octane. I would like to know the cause. I'd like to check the timing, but not sure how to defeat the computer controlled advance. (Or if this is even possible). Every plug that I have disconnected results in a complete shutdown of the engine. Is there a way to see what the timing is set at on the OBD controlled 460s?? Also, what is the "stock" setting? It appears the previous owner liked to tinker....so he may have advanced it.

I have a '94 460 that pinged on regular gas when towing. I had a mechanic change the timing, I don't know which way, I'm not a mechanic. It still pinged a little when about to downshift when towing. I put in a K&N air filter and changed to Motorcraft platinum plugs and the pinging went away and I can burn regular now even when towing.
Hope this helps, but a trip to the mechanic sounds like a good idea.
