Not to be crass, but used computers are worth "diddley squat". The price of these things is going down daily, and the new stuff is so much better. If he is a real friend, give him a break; ie real cheap. If you want to keep him as a friend, just give it to him. He might remember the favor. Used computers are really not worth much. In fact, one of the big issues is the landfill problems of "where are we going to put all these things".
I didn't think I could ask too much. I hate to see it in a land fill when it is still useable. He knows his way around computers, so I'm sure he could improve it.
Exactly my point. You don't wan't to see it in the landfill (I can't tell you how many I have tossed out that were still functional) but the real question is are you wanting to recover your investment. A computer today is not an investment (no matter how much you paid) but a tool. Why are you replacing it or getting rid of it? Does it not do what you need; are you upgrading? Have you looked into the used computer market? Lots of questions but not many answers. Don't expect to get your money back from a used computer. It's not unlike driving a new car off the lot!!! Loses a lot of value as soon as you leave.
I more or less just want to get rid of it so it doesn't take up the space around here. I bought a new Dell cause it was a good deal and I upgraded to a better system.
If he's really a friend-give it to him. You will be amazed how a gesture like that will come back to you many fold. Just don't use it as a lever like "you owe me".
I wouldn't figure its worth more than $ 100 max
I have pulled many computers out of dumpsters, and distributed them to friends who can use them. I really hate the way everything is considered disposable these days.
$250, if everything works. That processor is not that out of date. The cable modem is only worth something to someone that can use it. A 17" monitor is better than a 15" that most older systems have. The disk is quite adequate for most uses. It isn't a gamer system tho
I agree with this assessment. The 1400 isn't bad, although it's no screamer, but the RAM and HDD sizes really kill this system's usefulness for running modern software.
I have a 2GHz laptop with 128MB of RAM and a 40GB HDD, and it is frustratingly slow to do anything with. It's gotten to the point now that I really don't use it for much of anything except browsing the web and checking my e-mail.
