Thumbs down fuel guage not working

This is my first post. Found the forum by accident, I have really enjoyed reading the other posts. I have recently purchased a 1978 F100, 300 I6. The truck did not get used much in the last few years. It only has a little over 40,000 miles on it. But problems have begun to pop up. I put in a new clutch, rebuilt the carb, and replaced the shifting collar ( the original one broke). Now I would like to get the fuel guage working. Can anyone suggest where to start to correct this problem. Thanks in advance.

A wiring diagram would be your first project. You can get wiring diagrams in the OEM service manuals on CD available at the online store. You can also find partial diagrams in some Haynes and Chiltons manuals.

Check the connection at the sender. If it is not there pull the plug out of the gauge cluster and clean it a little. I had to clean my gauge plug to make my amp meter and right turn indicator work.

Find the sender wire on the tank and temporarily ground it while someone watches the guage - it should peg out past full if the wiring and guage are working.

Clean all connections at the tank and use dielectric grease on them, especially the ground to the frame.

Let us know what you find...
