I had the same problem except it was my 94 F150 with the I6. After 4 years with the original factory fuel filter, it would only go about 56mph on hills with the gas pedal to the floor. (It probably was the factory unit because the filter was welded to the frame by rust.) Ran smooth, but no power. Much better after the change. You'll need to get a filter removal tool, though.
