1988 Ranger 120,000 miles. Had since 92,000 miles. Sometimes idles perfect than be rough than perfect again. Also have to advance timing to run half way decent. It has done this since I got it. I have replaced plugs & wires, dist cap, rotor, TFI module next to dist cap & head gasket. Don't seem to find any vacuum leaks anywhere. Also when I totally cover the intake with my hand the motor still runs. Should it not die? Any help is appriciated, still love driving it even though it runs alittle rough.

Welcome to FTE njkid.
Good trick, putting your hand over the intake. Get some carb cleaner and spray it real close to every mating surface that could be leaking air. When you find a leak, the engine idle will increase. Do all the vacuum points as well.
Also, put a timing light on it and watch the timing mark. A loose timing chain will make the timing mark vary.
On the 2.9L, check the back corners of the intake manifold. I have seen many leak cold and then seal warm. Use vacuum guage on start up and watch it warm up. Most leaks were internal but did not suck oil or antifreeze in. Good luck.
Thanks for getting back to me. I have not had the chance to check for vacuum leaks with the carb cleaner method yet. We have had some bad weather lately and I have to work on my vehicle in the street as I am no lucky enough to have a garage yet. I will let you guys know.
Thanks!
