My dad has a 1996 Ford F-150 with a 4.9 L Inline 6. It runs on propane. Right beside his brake fluid reservoir there is a round "thingie" It has 2 heater hoses going into it. It is making a kind of rattling noise. There seems to be some kind of button on it and when we hold it in the noise stops but it sometimes stalls the truck. What is this part and what does it do? Should it be making these noises? Thanks.
That would be the propane fuel regulator. Propane enters this as a liquid. The heater hoses are to change the liquid propane into a gas so it can be burned in the engine.
The button most likely is a primer. If you run out of propane, you will push this button to fill the regulator again for ease of starting.
The noise is the rattling of the diaphragm and valve as it regulates the fuel. I am not sure how loud it usually is but I know my NG (natural gas) regulator makes noise the odd time but then mine is a fairly different system.
If you are concerned with it, have a qualified propane mechanic check it out.
