Tranny problems?
96 F-150 302 with 5spd 80k. Every time I shift to second gear, it is tough to shift and it makes a whinning noise. Shifting down is even worse. ???? All other gears seem normal.

bushing
There is a white plastic bushing that supports the shifter just inside the shifter tower - this has been known to cause some odd symptoms if it disintegrates. To check, remove the shifter boot and three torx-head bolts from the top of the shifter tower, and remove the shifter. The bushing should be visible in the pocket in the top of the tower. As the bushing gets worse, it is difficult to select any gears.... in any case this is a good first check because it is an easy and inexpensive fix.
