2000 excursion towing mirrors stuck

2000 excursion towing mirrors stuck
I had some body work done to my 2000 excursion diesel. I think the body shop painted the extension rods and they dried fully extended. Does the rods go into the mirror section or into the truck ? I want to get them pushed in closer to the truck instead of fully extended. The mirrors are not power mirrors. Any help is appreciated.
