The fact that rrtwins is a scammer was discovered in part thanks to your opening post #1 above in this thread, which Super Mod 85e150 found and followed up on with you, as well as brought to the attention of the rest of FTE's staff, which started the investigation that led to rrtwins being banned.
While every effort was made to alert other members who rrtwins sent PM's to, this post is to publicly warn all FTE forum members to:
- be especially careful when dealing with referrals to emails outside of FTE
- be especially observant of the amount of presence and participation that a member has established on FTE prior to transacting with that member. A member who has been actively participating on FTE for several years, and in some cases, decades, is a far safer bet than a username that has only been a member for a few months, with only a few posts, or in this case, a non-member "referred" by a new member. Yes, we all are new members when we join, but while the cream rises to the top... the questionable doesn't seem to, and therefore, the questionable should be questioned rigorously BEFORE transacting.
- If anyone askes for payment through an Apple Gift Card, that is a very strong and common sign of high likelihood of a scam taking place.
- Before sending any large payment for a part that someone purports to have in their possession, send the seller a unique and difficult to replicate trinket (you can make it yourself). Ask them to take a photograph of the item that they claim to have, with the trinket that you sent them physically positioned in the new picture, on top of or side by side with the item of interest for sale, which will prove that the person you sent the trinket to actually has the item that you are seeking in their physical position. You could email them a digital file and have them print it and put the print next to the item you are interested in and take a new photo, but then you wouldn't have their shipping address like you would if you sent them a physical trinket to for them to pose with item that they claim to have. If they are willing to give you THEIR shipping address, then that is a more comforting indication that they are legit, and not a scammer from out of the country who never had the part, and are just parroting what you want them to have until you send them payment, after which they ghost you.
- Assume that anyone who initiates transactional contact with you is a scammer, until they prove to your satisfaction otherwise.
