have a chance to buy 74 bronco 302, in barn since 83,guy took 3spd out w/transfer case ,sent to trans shop for repair back in 83 ,having trouble locating correct trans.i would like to go to 5spd,but realize full size f & bronco t-cases are too wide for frame.friend has a bronco II with 5.0 conversion on 5spd w/33's,only twisted a couple axles in last 3 yrs,so trans seems to be holding up well, any thoughts about putting bronco II 5 spd into 74,frame width is close.this truck is to clean to really do any hard wheeling with
I'd stick with the original Dana 20. A Bronco II transfer case won't hold up for long. If you're wanting a close ratio 5 speed, go with a T-5 (WC) or with the NV3500. For a heavier duty version, the NV4500 or the Ford ZF would be the way to go. There are adaptors available for all of them mentioned above.
If you are wanting to keep it along the original lines, the stock Bronco V8 3 speeds are a dime a dozen. I have 2 in my garage that could use a good home.
That Dana 20 is a very strong box. I had a modified 69 Bronco with a 429 SCJ and nitrous back in the late 1980's and never broke a thing (tranny was a C-6 with an Advance Adapters kit to mate the two).
