Question 289 vs 351W??

Hello all,

I recently bought 2 motors, well 1 and was given the other to get it out of the way, I was told 1 is a 351W and the other is a 289.
In looking at the casting numbers on the block by the starter both are C90E-6015 B, the 1 that I was told to be a 351W has a 351W specs sticker on the valve cover. the other one I pulled the valve cover and it has 351 cast into the head under the rockers, so I look a bit further into it and the water neck spacing to the water pump looks the same, as I am told on a 289/302 the water nect lower bolt is behind the water pump(is this true?) if it is that way on both then it looks like I got 2 315W's WOO HOO

Also am told they are all original, the one I pulled VC off of looks stock...30 yrs of sludge in there

Any ideas on this??
Thanks
Glack

The easiest way to tell if you have a 351W is by distance between the heads which will be wider than a 289/302 and I don't know the measurement off hand. I can measure the motors at home if need be. Another way which is the best way is looking for the ribs on the block on either side of the dizzy. The ribs are there because the 351W blocks are taller and the ribs are reinforcements.

You can't go by the head number since some one could have swapped heads which is a common thing to do with early 351W heads.

You can measure across the intake. 302/289 intakes are about 9 1/2 inches wide. The 351W's are 11 inches wide. A tape measure is plenty accurate to measure this.

Thanks!

I am going to measure those bad boys in the morning. I am going to tear into them, well one of them this weekend and get it to the Machine shop for a going thru and Start of the Head rebuild. Looks like we are going to mill them down a tad....010 and he mentioned enlarging the valves and a good porting and possible polishing. we are going to do as much as we can to the heads as the first motor will be a low budget build while we get wild on the second motor....good thing.....as the 292 Y-Block in the truck now is on its last leg...or at least sounds like it. It Still runs great but man what valve noise from that thing.

Thanks Again
