Tailgate handle has been hanging up, started this winter. I have to push it back in manually for the gate to lock. Needed to clean everything out of the bed anyway, so I tackled the gate since I was backed up to the garage door.
Took off the access panel to see if I could see anything. Tried to determine if it was the handle itself, the middle pivot, or the latches.
Unhooked the rod from handle to middle pivot. Pivot and latches worked great, handle was binding. Can’t access handle pivots to lubricate all parts. Hell, could not even see the whole pivot. 4 nuts and a camera connection removed, and the handle and trim is out.
I tried spraying white lithium grease on everything before removal, that’s why everything looks wet.
pivot is a metal pin pressed in plastic. Everything is plastic. Dripped a couple drops of thin oil on to each pivot and worked it about a hundred times. Finally it loosened up enough to return under its own power.
