alternator help needed

Hi everyone

Can someone please identify which terminal on this alternator is what? I know red is to go to battery, the 2 posts are ground, but I don't know which terminal needs 12 volts when key is on. Is it the black one or the orange one? I know one of these is the exciter but I can't find any specific details.

Thanks!

Chilton/Hayes paper book version. The less detail and easier to read version. Lol

Does your instrument cluster have 4 gauges?

Orange is the field black is the stator. They both were wired to the external voltage regulator which is where the ignition switch ties into. The stator (black is also used for electric choke on original carburetors and provided unrectified current meaning it is alternating current/voltage.

If you use it with an aftermarket electric choke it will delay opening because its not 12 volts dc like many require. The nice thing about the original electric choke was if the engine died while warming up unattended the choke didn't keep heating and opening.

Thanks guys for your input here. Currently our motor is on a run stand which we've built. The alternator is on the motor but I don't have the voltage regulator connected. I'm hoping that I can connect the red from the alternator to the battery and see if the alternator is actually charging. So my thought was to connect 12 volt battery positive to the field, connect ground, and then I should be able to see via the use of an amp-clamp if the alternator is putting out.

Does this make sense?

The way I understand it, the volt regulator meters current to the field to excite and charge the battery. I am not responsible for electrical mishaps

I would add a bit of 12 v dc to the field orange stud. Let us know if that works.

yes! we're on the same page... I just figure this "should" instruct the alternator to put out 12 volts and hopefully a suitable amount of current which I'd like to measure. The motor will run on the battery alone for a bit but I figure it's worth a try.

I'll let you know
