Ford E-350 Cube Van - Engine Removal

Looking for hints/help/recommendations to make the process of removing the 460 ci engine from the 1991 Ford E-350 High Cube van that we use to tow the rally car to races. We need to have it rebuilt.

The engine is mated to an electronic overdrive automatic transmission. It is a snub nosed style van with the engine sitting mostly between the driver/passenger seats under a center cowling.

We are very familliar with dismantling the engines/trannie in the race car but not this behemoth tow rig. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have never R&R'd a 460 from the 75-91 E-Series, but I did a 351 a number of years ago. A rented cherry picker lifted it right out & forward after I had removed the radiator, a/c condensor, & radiator support. The exhaust manifolds may also need to come off first, since the 385 series engines are a bit wider than the Windsors. You can do it! Though it won't go as fast as pit stop at the races!

Hello-

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! The Internet's leading Ford TRUCK and SUV Resource!

This thread has been moved from Garage and Workshop Tips forum where we share ideas about how to organize tools, heat the shop, or free that rusty bolt.

Unfortunately no truck tech questions are allowed there. Please scan down the list of available forums and place your topic in the most specific forum you can find, -fairly simple to do and just takes a moment.

Please take the time to read the headings and notices in each forum. The FTE board is HUGE! We want users to be able to find answers to their questions so it is organized into many areas and search tools are provided.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact a moderator.

Please turn on your email function. Users do not have access to your actual email address.

Thanks for using FTE!

Thanks for relocating - I thought I had this topic open when posting.

Thanks too, Donner, for the words of encouragement - definitely a larger looking task than the boxer 4 in the Rally car. I had heard that the cross member would be a difficult item to clear when lifting the unit out. But was definitely hoping to hear the engine would actually come out the front [assuming radiator/support removal, grille etc.; our rig has no A/C]. We have a rolling engine hoist to assist.

Just looking for those "gotcha's" that always end up costing you hours of time!
