Fuel Filter change

Ibought new fuel filters for my '97 f250 psd and my dad's '01 e350 psd. Upon simple visual inspection, I don't see it. I figured the quickest way was to ask you fellas. Also, if there is an online procdeure for changing it that was be appreciated too. Thanks in advance....

On the 97 its under the little "door" if you have an early model, or under the decorative cover if you have a late model. Anyways, its just a round metal canister with a black plastic lid. Unscrew it with the help of a screwdriver or something. Pop out the old filter and put in the new. It would be a good idea to drain the filter bowl while your in there too.

I dont know about the 01, but it should be similar.

How often should you change it?

depending on how meticulous you are on your service, I've heard anything from 6K-9k...I'm a little over 6 on my current one now and will probably change it before it gets to 7500.

in Ford's Scheduled Maintenance guide...they list a fuel filter change every 15,000 miles. While 7k is probably a little excessive, I think 15K might be a little inflated. Based on this, I will probably wait til about 10k to change.

I just bought my truck used and have put 2200 miles already! Maybe I should change it anyway so I know exactly where I stand. Isn't there a water separator that needs to be changed also? Where is that located and the change intervals?

Thanks

No water seperator, just drain the bowl with the little yellow handle on the side of the bowl. I change mine every 3 oil changes, which is every 12,000 miles (4,000 oil change - I even think that's overkill). Remember, if you buy diesel at regular gas stations, there's a pretty good chance they don't sell a whole lot of diesel and it sits for a while. I like to think filter changes every 12,000 will catch any contaminants.

I think most gassers change every 30,000 or so, right? You have a lot more consistent gasoline quality than diesel quality. I just can't pass up that cheap diesel. I'm even thinking of putting in pre-pump filter for assurance.

I would recommend that you go ahead and change it if you bought a used vehicle. For the peace of mind and for your own service records, its good to know your starting out fresh. The fuel filter works as the filter and the separator. Its a combined thing. Thats whey when you have water in the fuel, you go to the fuel filter housing and slide the little lever to open it up and let the water/diesel mix out. As far as I'm aware, there is not any seperate filter to change...when you change the fuel filter it will take care of all of it.

Where does it drain to? Do you mean drain it out of the housing area?

When you flip the lever, it drains out a hose attached to the bowl and spills on the ground under your truck. The beautiful aroma of diesel everywhere...

You can look up under your truck and probably slip a piece of hose over the end of the tube. It's a metal tube on the front right side of the engine. For some reason I want to say its near a groundstrap or something? Kinda hard to get to.
