I
All,
I am a novice doing my first involved engine work. I am working on my 1995 F150 with 5.0L EFI and wish to make sure I have the correct information as I begin to shop for timing chain (root cause of why it is sitting), upgrade intake, exhaust, and rest TBD as I research more.
this is the best I could get from the block. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Closest I seem to find is "F1SE" with roller-cam and one-piece rear main seal. Does this sound reasonalble?
A lot of oily grime around seal, by the way. Any thoughts?
Thank you again.
If it's a roller block, it should have the threaded holes for the spider in the lifter valley. If that is the original block for your truck, it should be a roller.
Woohoo! 302 Windsor with 6-bolt valve covers, thermostat housing bolts into the intake, and external timing cover.
Now I can start poking around threads with a good direction in mind. F150 has been sitting for years. My goal is to restore, disassemble for general cleaning, strengthen the motor for low-end (pulling a camper).
It is my understanding if one were doing a total rebuild, you would start with the block and work up from there. However, I have no reason to think the block is anything but the standard and durable 302. Do not know how deep I should dive in given that she has been sitting so long.
RWFID: Thank you for your help getting me started!
I wouldn't think much more than 5,000 lbs or so. Still in the fantasy stage, if my engine work goes well (read: if I successfully take my current knowledge and skills up a level), I would like to attempt to convert my 2wd to a 4wd. I'm thinking something in 4.10 range.
From what I am seeing, there are a couple of low-end kits available. There is some guidance going with used GT40 heads, etc. I think it would be smarter for me to spend the extra on a new stock kit. I do not have that level of machine-savvy yet for putting this together piece by piece. Worse, I am one of those people who has to learn everything the hard way!
Summit racing, Trick, Edelbrock. Research to do.
I appreciate your help! Always nice to talk to someone who actually knows something!
Gears, will help the most, 2wd? or 4wd? what does camper weigh?
My F250 has a 5.8 w/3.55. I like low RPM's while driving down the freeway. Even with all the mods I had, I can barely pull my 5th wheel level in 4th. I reluctantly changed my differential gearing to 4.10. Boy it made a difference. Sure, the RPM's are a little higher, but it's still under 2,000 rpm at freeway speed. I really don't need/want to go 70mph towing my 5th wheel.
I am a convert, I never wanted to change my differential gearing, but I am glad I did. Who knows, maybe with the stroker engine I am building, I can put the 3.55 back into it. Until then, my 4.10 gearing is perfect for me.
