Angry Bad cam lobe?

Hi Guys, how does a person determine if there motor has a bad cam lobe/lifter? My lifters are not real noisy ( ticks once in a while ) but when I rev it up a LITTLE there seems to be a slight vibration in the motor. Its seems I have more rockerarm noise than lifters, these are adj rockers/shafts ( yes the oiling holes are in the correct position ). I have " The Book " by Steve C, and have tried adj according to the book, and also by slowwing down the idle alot and doing it like a c***y by backing them off until they click then tighten them up a turn. Any ideas on where to start? Also, the ignition is the big cap conversion w/ Ignitor running thru an MSD5 w/8mm wires. Any help would be appreciated . Al

A bad lobe will not be adjustable, make lots of racket and act like a burnt valve. Don't think you are there yet. I'd guess a sticky lifter bore or a bad lifter. Jank the intake, carefully examine each lifter and see if they slide down the bore with a little oil on them and just the weight of the lifter. Also look at the lobes for scoring or galling and use a dial indicator to measure the lift. A push rod touching the intake will cause an intermittant click. I'd guess a bad lifter or sticky bore.

Worn off lobe may not always make alot of noise. I had one wear off on a 390 and it didn't make a noise just run rough like you pulled one of the plug wires off. I would check all of your compressions first. that might point you in the direction of which cylinder is causing the problem.
Good Luck!
