Does anyone have any suggestions as how to diagnose an amp that has the "protection" light on? I've checked all the obvious things: crossed wires, loose connections, overheating. The amp will come on and then the protection light comes on right away and there is no sound. It happened all of a sudden, it had been fine since installed about 1 yr. ago. I guess I have a dead amp, but hoping someone has an easy fix
usually in cases like that I usually eliminate any possible external problems(blown speakers, shorts, opens, etc.) the look inside the amp. often a component burns up inside and you can see telltale signs like burn marks on the board. if I find a burned component, usually you can resolder a new one in, and that fixes it. beyond this, diagnostics are more complicated than we could really get into here, and require test equipment, so I'll leave it at that, since I am just a hobbyist, and not qualified to teach a class in electronics.
Disconnect everything from the amp except the positive and negative battery terminals. If the light still comes on check the leads for proper voltage both while the engine is running and while the engine is off. If the proper voltage (11.8-14.4V) is present you have blown your amp. At this point check your owners manual to locate any user serviceable parts (ie fuses)
thanks for all the suggestions. Finally had a chance to mess with it and found the problem -- blown speaker. I guess the old MTX's finally gave out, so now I need to shop around for a couple of subs.
