2006 e250 miss

2006 e250 5.4l new motor and tranny put in 60k ago truck has about 295k. Last week it picked up a miss but it hasn't thrown a code. I think it's the idle air control (IAC). It's done this occasionally ever since the motor was put in on start up (maybe once every 3wks) but smoothed out after 100ft or so. I do think it's air related why I thinks it the IAC. Any suggestions?

Doesn’t sound air related.

Get a scanner with Mode $06 that counts misfires in each cylinder and you’ll be ahead of this guessing game.

Your van should have electronically controlled throttle, so no IAC valve.

Scan for codes is first
Your scanner will have "live data" and a misfire monitor and record function
Scan the front HEGO sensors and watch them switch, replace the spark plugs and coil boots
Do the pinpoint tests in the 2006 PCED for any codes you get

Free resource for service manual and diagrams. I still prefer a paper copy.

That is a very good resource Don
I looked up a few familiar recalls and TSB's
I did not see any PCED info, but I still assume it is in there
It looks almost identical to the AllData factory Ford stuff at the library

Charm was the original source but it only went up to 2012. Lemon took over and now goes up to 2023. They cover all manufacturers but I linked to the Ford page.

Ok I found the mode $06. Each cylinder over last ten driving cycles says no misfires. When we put the motor in one of the injectors plugs broke and was replaced. Think I'll start looking there.

Maybe I'll post the live data once I finger out how to save and transfer to the computer.

Ok just looked up what a HEGO sensor is there is a p0420 code that has been popping up on occasion since the eclipse in April 2024. The truck ran for like 16hrs almost constantly that day when it 1st popped up. Since it pops on occasion but go away with a day or 2. Maybe found problem. Probably change sensor.

The 420 catalyst efficiency code has to do with the rear HEGO sensors
You can monitor those too with your scan tool and watch them switch (those rear ones will not switch fast like the front ones) they basically stay fixed

Both 420 and 430 are the death codes for the cats
421 is a similar code for the warm up cat on a 4 cat y pipe or a 2 cat single pipe
