I have a 1990 manual Bronco II with automatic locing hubs and an on dash button electronic shift. I just purchased this vechile about three months ago and both the 4 high and 4 low tested good. I have recently tried to use my 4x. It shifts into 4 high with no problems but when I hit the 4 low button it just blinks. I already know that the vechile needs to see the two conditions of having the the brake derpressd and haveing the vechile in neutral, it stilll doesn't work. I have heard of the possibility of it being the shift motor. I have tried tapping it with no results. When it shifts into 4 high it sounds like the motor engages solid. When I shift to 4 low I get no sound from the motor. I would like to confirm that the control box and the motor are getting the correct voltages at the correct times. I have not found any good schematics so that I can track down and test correctly. If anyone knows how to test this or knows how I can get a schematic please et me know.
Shift motors is deffinately a possibility. I've been posting about this a lot lately because it seems people are needing their 4x4 now that winter is here. Usually they just need cleaned out on the inside. If you want to see how I did it check the thread in the Ranger forumn titled "4wd won't engage" Sorry for not posting it here but it's really late and I've already posted it in two or three spots today. Good luck.
I found this site that gives a very good descreption on how to test all electronic funtions of the electronic shift, including all sensors and switches.
I found that I had loose connectors on one of the plugs for the electronic shift module. I made sure the connections were good and now I have 4 low. Thanks!
I have an 86 BII with the push button 4x4. Try the clutch, you need to have the clutch pushed right to the floor for the transfer case to shift. It will just sit there with the light on the 4L button blinking until the clutch is pushed to the floor. In my truck, if the clutch isn't in, the light on the 4 Low button will just blink until I push the clutch in.
