Let's talk 8.8 front differentials

While I don't have any first-hand experience, there seems to be quite a few 8.8 front differentials grenading themselves while in reverse. I'm not talking about doing burnouts in reverse, or anything crazy, but rather simple things like backing up a trailer or getting yourself unstuck in the snow, causing differential to eat itself.

I'm aware all spiral bevel gears are significantly weaker in reverse. My understanding is in the forward direction the gears pull themselves together, but in reverse they're pushing away from each other.

So what's going on? Has there been a design change in recent years causing reliability issues?

Good question! Maybe 2018 and newer?

F150 trucks, not high horsepower Raptor or Raptor R versions.
