I have a 2002 XLT 4X4, 4.0 SOHC OFF-ROAD. 40,000 miles
I have noticed that at 35 mph there is significant vibration coming into the vehicle. The vib is noticable at other speeds and gears. I had the wheels balanced, rotated, and alligned, but it did not help. The dealer insisted it was uneven wear in the tires, but 5000 miles and a rotation later the problem is still there. Any ideas?
Sounds like u-joints or hangar bearing. Is it an auto or manual trans. Get up to 40 and put in neutral (or push in the clutch) If the vib is still there its in the drivetrain. If it goes away, its engine or xmsn. Check the driveshaft, and if the joints can be greased, give them a squirt to see if that helps. If the vib is less or goes away, it u-joints. Is it worse, better or no change between 2wd & 4wd. Are the hubs locked. Could also be the front drivetrain joints.
Its an automatic. I'll try the tests you suggested. I have not noticed any difference between 4wd and 2wd. The truck has auto locking hubs. Thats for the advice. I'll post a update tomorow.
Luckily I had the dealer document the problem before 36,000 miles so if I can prove that its not the tires making the noise they are obligated to fix it.
