i have a 77 f150 ex-cab and i have a problem with with the charging system i think.... do these trucks usually have fairly dim lights?? at night they are pretty dim and when i turn on an accessory like heater or what ever they go dimmer.i replaced the the chassis ground. ant regulator.no change
can i install an internally regulated alt.on it i have one off a later model 302 injected car(i assume it puts out more amps)
what do you think?? what can i do with out spending a fortune on a higher end unit??
The stock system was perfectly adequate for the truck's normal usage. I would check the voltage at the battery. Should be around 13-14 volts with the truck running. If that looks ok, check the voltage at the headlamps. It should be around 12 volts.
It might be something as simple as the alternator belt being worn out or a little loose.
Check out the tech article section one called "whiter whites brighter brights" the other 85 amp one wire alternator install. I wrote the one on the alternator and use the relays for lights. I also use sylvania halogen bulbs. I have plenty of light, at idle with the heat on as well.
Don't forget to check the ground wires at the headlights, sometimes they get corroded and takes a lot more amps to push through all that corrosion,or is it volts, well any way just my 2 cents.
