cruise control

Hi Here´s stupid question...
Don´t know how to use my cruise control on my recently adquired explorer sport 96.I am assuming that it it working. There´s an on and off button on the left, and there other ones on the right. I have tried all posible combinations and appart from a dash light that appears nothing else happens and the vehicles drops in velocity every time. then I press off and the light is gone. Is there a specific trick to operate this gadget? Actually I am new to cruise control. I will appreciate some kind soul that will iluminate me.
Thanks in advance.

Hi karslake,

It's real easy once you've got the hang of it.

Once you're on the road and you've got a little speed going, press and release the On button. After you've done that, press and hold the Set Accel button. While you're holding that button down, the car will begin to accelerate as if you were pressing the gas. Once you've reached a speed you're comfortable at, release the button and the car will stop accelerating and hold that speed. If you want to slow things down a bit without braking, press the coast button. That will have the effect of taking your foot off the gas. And (I believe) once you want to return to the speed you were holding previously, press the Resume button.

And don't forget, that owner's manual can be your best friend.
