Hello all!!!! I have a 2000 F350 Powerstroke 4x4 with a 4 inch lift and 315's on 16x10 inch rims. It gets very difficult to steer at a standstill or when turning at take off... Any recommendations... Already did the powersteering pump ans steering box...
Your lift & over-sized tires aren't helping much, but IMO it has to be something with the front axle geometry on 4x4s. My '00 F250 and '01 F350 (both with V10s and no lift or large tires) were practically impossible to steer at slow speeds while braking- like when maneuvering a trailer. Don't let the other PSD owners convince you that it is a hydro-boost problem because it is NOT! To my knowledge, no one has come up with a real "fix" yet.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-02 AT 11:18 AM (EST)]These trucks have a fairly old fashioned steering set-up, simple and strong though. Anytime you put on lifts and wide wheels the steering will become harder and tax the components, especially power steering pumps. AGR has a few things that can help if you are willing to spend some $$. New pumps that are worked over to flow better all the way to ram assist. The assist can move the entire trucks front end sitting still if a tire was against a big rock, the weak link becomes the tie rod.
Yeti also asked a good question about the pitman arm. If you didn't get the drop arm with the 4" lift your geometry is off and the increased angle will make it harder to steer as well as giving you some fun bump steer.
when I put my 8 ft. Fisher plow on and if I'm stopped the steering is very hard to turn. I put more pressure to 75 psi. and that has helped.
But I notice even without the plow on if you have the foot on the brake firmly the steering will be harder. The more you put your foot on the brake the harder the steering.
I don't know if this will help but I thought I'd input it anyway.
I never had a problem like that on my other trucks, Dodge, and Chevs.
