2016 F-150 Fluid Flushes
Greetings,
I have a 2016 F-150 4x4 5.0 SC that I recently bought and it just rolled over 60.000 miles. I had been looking for the right truck to replace the '15 that I totaled a couple years ago. I want to do a complete system flush and refill on the transmission, cooling system, brake system, and both differentials, and then keep it on a 50k schedule. I bought all of the fluids from Amazon, but after giving more thought to it, I think I'll have the trans, cooling system and brakes done by the local Ford place that's equipped with the appropriate machinery to do it right and complete. Question: regarding the trans flush, the guy told me that they do not drop the pan or change the filter during their process. I don't know about that. I think when you're changing all of the trans fluid that you should get a new filter and especially inspect the magnets for any shavings or excess wear, although it runs and shifts great. $350.00 is steep for a trans flush with a new filter, let alone without one.
Cooling system flush will get rid of the pink coolant and get it on the new yellow spec fluid with a complete flush which is a pain to try at home. Thinking about switching to a 10w 20 oil on the the next oil change, full synthetic, and not doing the super light 5 weight oil anymore. Thoughts?

Yes, I would request pan be dropped and magnet be cleaned. "Filter" is really just a screen and if it needs replaced you've got bigger problems.
As far as oil - use the viscosity specified in the manual. No way I would deviate at only 60,000 miles!

The filter on these is much more than just a screen like older trans and filters a much smaller micron rating. I highly recommend replacing the filter on the 6R80 to stave off torque converter shudder and delay speed sensor and shift solenoid contamination. Expect to pay quite a bit more for Ford parts at a Ford service department for this service. Depending on the matrix, your looking at $350 in parts alone for XT10QLVC, the pan gasket and filter, plus labor
Thanks for the correction SMSTX! My 4R70W is like most older transmissions, the filter is just a screen to prevent large debris from causing a complete failure. If OP changes the filter now, would it be likely the only time it's ever needed, or do these things routinely collect debris?
I stopped by my local Ford dealer yesterday to get a quote on fluid changes ( Rad., Trans., Front and rear Diffs., and Transfer case ) they quoted me $1,000 bucks. I have owned my 2015 Ford F150 FX4 3.5l Ecoboost since new and did the first fluid changes at 60,000 miles. My truck has 138,000 on her now but mainly sits in the driveway. I only put 1,000 miles on it last year. To the dealers credit they said that they would give me a discount for being a Ford retiree. My question is does this quote seem high? Really can't remember what I paid years ago.

Yeah. Actually, that’s pretty fair. Mine was last done 6 years and 22k miles ago. I’m going to defer to time, rather than miles this time. The truck is too nice to replace with a new comparable one for $65k or so. It makes no sense for as little as it gets used now. Might as well take good care of it. At 11 years old, it’s is value is about as low as it will get. The value will now follow the market, as long as the miles stay low, 74k now. $1000 is about what one monthly payment is on a new truck these days.
JKBrad, That's how I feel about my truck. Other than being 11 years old next month ( She actually rolled out of Dearborn Assy. on my birthday ) there is nothing wrong with it. No dents, rust or scratches.Only some stone chips from driving on I-75 in Michigan most of its life. Bought my wife a new 2024 Ranger Lariat FX4 with all the gadgets so we drive that all the time. Was looking real hard at getting a 2025 F-150 Tremor brand new with all the deals I could get for $57,000 but even that is to much.
Unfortunately, these "simple" fluid change are more involved than you'd think. The front differential is between a crossmember and the steering rack and many guides suggest removing one of these to access the cover. I just paid my dealership to do all this one my 2020, and the price sure hurt. However, being that I don't have a warm shop to work in, or a hoist, it would have been days of work for me, with a decent chance of wrecking something else. Worth it in peace of mind to get it done at the dealer.
