Unhappy Flucuating Oil Pressure

I seem to be my Dad's personal mechanic. He has a 1990 F250 with the 5.8L. He, as many people in this forum, has a flucuating oil pressure gauge (dummy light). I took the advise from other postings and installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Everything is fine until the motor heats up and I come to an idle in gear. The pressure drops close to zero, but the motor has no knocks or ticks. Probably just a matter of time.............. Is it a bad bearing? Oil pump?

Any suggestions?

I would say a combo of both. But I'm sure if you installed a new oil pump you would see atleast a 15psi increase in the oil pressure. I got a 20psi increase in my 289 from a new pump.

Edit....waiting for this post to be merged with another.

I just had the same problem F250 4x4 91 my problem ended up being the bottom of the dist. wore out and wasnt turning the oil pump when the engine got warm, I bet if it is not knocking it is the oil pump or check the dist. do it soon because it wont take long before that engine is pooched and you will end up like me looking for a new motor

i had the same thing happen to myself, cold the psi was normal, warm driving the psi was 20 at idle it dropped to 5 or so. Ran great no knocks or anything, but it was the main bearings in my case. Could be anything I guess, later
