Options questions

While building my truck on Ford.com, there is an option for REMOTE START - $250. But if I keep scrolling down to "Accessories", there is an option for "Vehicle Security System - Ford Perimiter Plus" - $255.58
The Security Perimeter option states: "When activated by your Ford Dealer, the Basic Remote Start System is also included; start your vehicle from up to 300’ away".
So does this mean it also includes the remote start,...or do I need to order that separately and the other option is more of an alarm??? I am a little confused!

Thanks!

Have you tried adding the Security option without adding the remote start option, or any trim level or package that includes it? If the remote start is required, a pop up will appear that shows you have to add it along with the security option.

Well I added the remote start 1st,..but then noticed the other option. I figured the 2nd option did include remote start by the way it was worded,...but it did not automatically delete the 1st Remote Start, or tell me I would be buying it twice. That's what's really confusing me?!!

It wouldn’t delete it and you wouldn’t be buying it twice. Many options require other items when adding them. Not many options are truly à la carte anymore… you could try just adding the security package without the remote start to see if it prompts you to add it as well. You could also look through the order guide to see what it says. Or maybe someone will come along that has that package and can clarify.

Thanks man. Yeah hopefully someone who dealt with this will know. I was expecting it to force me to add the 1st remote option, I just wish it was a little more clear.
I will try a different build site,....any recommendations? (I believe I used Edmund's years ago but it has been some years since I had to do this again!)

I wouldn't imagine that any of those other "build" sites would be helpful. They likely just scavenge the info from what Ford has on their site, and sometimes even their own build site has bugs. I would suggest looking up the actual Ford Order Guide. It is usually the most definitive. You could also search YouTube for videos that go into more detail.

Saying that, I did go and "build" a truck to see what you are talking about. This is what it says:

Remote Start and Vehicle Security

Vehicle Security System - Ford Perimeter Plus

$255S8Use your factory key fobs to arm and disarm, helps provide contents protection too
  • When there’s sufficient impact to the glass or a body panel, the 2-stage shock sensor determines whether to issue a warning chirp or full alarm
  • When activated by your Ford Dealer, the Basic Remote Start System is also included; start your vehicle from up to 300’ away
  • Parking lights remain on during remote start so you know the engine is idling
  • Run time and other features are easily programmed through the vehicle’s driver information center
Also, when clicking that little "S8" notation next to the price, this comes up:

Dealer Accessories are defined as items that do not appear on the factory window sticker that are installed by a Ford Dealer or Lincoln Retailer. Actual Prices for all accessories may vary and depend upon your dealer/retailer. Prices DO NOT include installation or painting, which may be required for particular items. Please check with your authorized dealer/retailer for complete pricing accuracy for all accessories and parts....
(There is more that comes up too, but this seems to be the important part.)

Based on this, it does look like/sound like remote start is included, but they also state that it may have to be activated by the dealer. When ordering a truck, some items are dealer installed options, and the Perimeter Plus option sounds like one of them. This would mean that when the truck arrived at the dealership, they would then install the package (likely just plug in a module), and would then activate it (turn it on) using FDRS. When turning it on, it must also require the remote start feature to be turned on as well. (These things are simple to do as the option are already in the truck and a simple check mark can turn features on and off, but you need either FDRS or Forscan to do so.) So yes, remote start is included, but you may not get the FOB with the remote start button...

After reading another thread (HERE) it sounds like the non-remote key FOB can also be used to remote start the truck by pressing a sequence of buttons (LOCK - UNLOCK - LOCK) rather than having the dedicated remote start button like the remote start FOB has. So, this may be a difference in the 2 packages. With the remote start option, you get the remote start FOB. With the Perimeter Plus option you may only get the basic FOB, which uses a button sequence to remote start.

Also, keep in mind, any of these trucks can be remote started using the FordPass app even if you don't get the remote start or the Perimeter Plus option.

So, based on this, you don't need to add the remote start, just add the Perimeter Plus option. It won't force you to add the remote start option but you will probably only get the regular FOB.

Something else, I don't know what trim level you are looking at, but remote start is a pretty common feature now days. I think it comes standard on the XLT Premiums and up... so if you are looking at say even a basic Lariat, all of this is moot because that trim automatically include remote start.

Wow thanks a lot! That is the info I was hoping to get. Unfortunately, I will be ordering an XLT Regular Cab so the Premium XLT package is not an option
.
But basically to recap,...I actually "can" order both options, but I will be paying twice for the remote start,...but I will also get an upgraded fob for the basic remote start option if I did so. (My 2016 requires me to click LOCK twice then REMOTE START button twice as it is,...so just getting the Security Perimiter/Remote start option would be fine for me as I am used to pushing more than 1 button already.)

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

From reading, that is my take away. I definitely wouldn't add both options and just pick one. And at only $5 more, the Perimeter Plus option sounds like it offers more. When you sit down with your salesman to order the truck though, I would clarify these things, and while I wouldn't think there would be, I would also make sure that there is no annual subscription or anything associated with the Perimeter Plus. If there were that would persuade my consideration...]

Also, I ordered my 2022 as an XLT Value and I love it! They don't even offer a Value package anymore I don't think, so the base XLT is probably the same thing now. And I will say that if it is still an option, the keypad on the door has been my favorite add on! I wouldn't buy another one without it! I rarely use my remote start, but I use that keypad everyday!

I agree, the keypad is a must!
Unfortunately, they deleted it for 2025, but then added back on for 2026,...but only for crew and extended cabs, But the cheap "wireless" one is still an option, so I guess it's better than nothing!
It is frustrating though that the keypad and larger screen options are only available on the XLT PREMIUM trims, which require the Crew/Extended cabs, and I am 100% set on a regular cab.

I just built one without the remote start and added the vehicle security and it didn't make me add the remote start.

But you are also confident that a remote start comes with that package, correct? I am 99% sure, but the way it is on the build page had me on the fence if I was right. LOL

The confusion Ford created might be based on HOW to perform a remote start. The keyfob is one, the phone app is another. The phone app is likely to be a subscription that Ford might start charging for.

After researching this topic, there is actually 3 ways to start the truck:
  1. The app, which is free, and available for all trucks, even the ones without the remote start option or the Perimeter Security package. Of course you do need to download the app though.
  2. The remote start key FOB. Comes with the remote start option.
  3. The non-remote key FOB. Most likely this is the one that comes with the Perimeter Security only package

The way it is written i would say the remote start comes with that package. I guess you would have to ask a dealer to be sure.

That makes sense, apparently there are 2 different FOB's
The remote start somebody else mentioned is just a push of the Remote Start FOB,...and the perimeter plus has a different FOB that you need to use a sequence.
My 2016 needs the LOCK button pushed twice,...then the Remote button pushed twice. Very simple!
I will just go with the Perimeter plus option,...
Thanks everybody!
