Slick Service Bed Idea

Hello All,

I have a 1964 F100, and was thinking about putting a service bed on it. I would like to stay period correct, and was wondering if anyone has an idea what bed would be such? Thanks!!

Here's what was on my 61-short-F100. I took it off to replace with a flare side. They are usually heavy, even when empty. My truck has extra over load springs, someday to be removed.

I used to appreciate the old Bell Telephone utility beds - they just had the look you want for a vintage truck. They were mostly use on Fridges (57-50) and earlier trucks, if I recall correctly. Not sure of their weight, and overall utility, but I’m guessing they’d be better suited to an F250. They’ve gotta weigh a ton. You can Google probably a hundred photos, if you’re so-inclined.

totally agree, I like the old Ma Bell trucks too. My 61 has dark green original color, so could have been telephone co or army, but I find no data plates, just holes where something was at one time.

Heavy beds…,

I’ve had a couple of service beds over the years, on a 67 F250, and a mid 90’s F250.
I think the beds alone weighed about 500# more than the factory beds. They were stout, and they also had massive rear bumpers.
The performance gain when I pulled them off was noticeable, I feel it’s a combination of weight and wind resistance. Both trucks gained a couple of MPG, and were peppier.

And then I see this one!

Yeah, the old telephone bed would be worth the weight and wind resistance penalties.
Really classic bed and paint.
