replacing ball joints

First off ,i know I need a manual, but just wanted a little info first.
I need to replace my ball joints. I have an 87 F150 4x4 with a 4" lift and 33' Yokohama tires. What I wanted to know ,was if the ball joints are pressed on or if they are threaded on? Also what are the chances that I can replace them without taking them off the vehicle, rust is obviously a factor here, but I was just wondering if it was possible to break them free leaving them installed as much as possible. Thanks for any help.

They are pressed on. You have to take the whole outer spindle off to press the old ones out and the new ones in.

Yeah buddy! Have fun! I went to AutoZone and rented the Ball Joint Press tool. It was $100 rental fee, but I got that back when I took the tool back. It was definitely worth it! Make sure you have a BFH to smack the old ball joints out! It took me a min. to realize I really had to beat on them to release them. The new ball joints went in with no problems once I figured out the tool!

get the tool it makes the assembly go quick. i changed all four ball joints and packed the wheel bearings in 6 hours. the included dealing with the rust factor on my 93 4x4. the steering was much easier once i got those rusty ball joints off and the pump doesnt howl so bad.
