Removing the latch mechanism from the door is the easy part - removing the side window glass usually helps. Getting inside the mechanism itself is about guaranteed to break the danged tabs that hold the thing together.
Smarter folk have successfully repaired the worn bits inside. I failed and bought a new mechanism from Midwest Early Ford - which fit perfectly and performed flawlessly for a number of years.
Welcome to the forum, Marc! Nice truck. You introduced it as an F1, but it looks Mercury. Which is it really? We need a little more info the help with your diagnosis. What does the handle do, exactly? The handle on these trucks is as simple as it gets. It's a square shaft stuck onto the handle, which fits into a square hole inside the latch mechanism, which rotates the latch release. Something inside there is obviously malfunctioning. The handle is attached to the door by one round head fine thread machine screw located behind the weatherstrip, inline with the handle. If you carefully peel back the rubber, you'll see a hole in the door shell and the screw is inside there. It's also commonly rusted and very hard to remove, fyi. Lubrication and great care is recommended in trying to remove it, but it has to come out if you're going to go inside to remove the latch. It's step one. Good luck, let us know what you find.
