I have a 1998 F150 4.2l with over 300K miles I turned on it a few months ago. When trying to replace the rear ABS sensor on top of the differential by gently lifting up on both sides, I heard a crack. Ended up having to pick pieces of this 27 year old sensor out. One piece remains and it’s the housing, a metal cup shape with outer edge getting caught on edge of hole. I’ve tried using picks to get it out. Don’t have an extractor large enough but was going to buy a #8 and cut it to fit. Haven’t tried a magnet yet if it’s not aluminum. Don’t know if I’ll harm anything if I catch one side and try to tap down and collapse it in on itself. Any other ideas? Thanks.
I was actually wondering if it's not the tone ring that's bad. If you had the diff open you'd know. Plus you might be able to punch it out from underneath although it's a tight space. 300,000 is a lot, has it been worked on before?
Never mind. Problem solved. Got it out with the cutting edges of a 3/4 x 10 tap. It wasn’t a tight fit but they grabbed. Top of the housing was flared out. No, it has never been worked on before. Thanks for responding!
That is why they put the ridges in the new service part VSS sensors (easier to remove) and less trouble with them breaking off
* Always twist that sensor prior to removal
It will only twist about 1/8 inch each way but that is enough
Remove cover plate and force the sensor out with a bent screwdriver or punch
