I moved from the south to the sticks of western PA last December. It has legit not been above freezing since before New Year's and let's just say this has been a shock to the system in terms of the cold weather and the sheer amount of snow we've gotten.
I'm fortunate enough to be able to garage the truck at home so it stays out of the ice and snow but it definitely gets cold in the garage. What surprises me driving in this sloppy mess is how stable the truck is.....yeah taking off from a stop you have to pretty much idle away otherwise it will just spin and cut power but I live off a fairly winding and hilly road and it's really good about not getting loose or squirrely going around tight corners. Of course I'm driving like a sane person, but it does not feel like it's on the ragged edge of losing traction. This is with the stock 18" Dueller AT tires (which kinda suck) and I have just over 15K miles.
We went to a state park today and did some hiking, the roads in the park were pretty slick in areas and the parking areas were not plowed at all. Put it in 4H and it backed right in, same thing pulling out.
I love it when people from warmer climates tell you that all you have to do is wash off the salt and the frame will be fine! They don’t realize that it doesn’t get above freezing for weeks at a time and you have to use your truck every day in the salt, slush and slop. That’s why when you drive in this climate and you want to keep your vehicle, you have to use a product similar to Krown or fluid film yearly.
Snowcrete, the Arctic Blast & the coldest winter in years is proving the Dueler A/T tires to be barely viable, a failing grade even in 4L and pulling all the stops.
I have no problems with the cold, love doing stuff outdoors in the cold like running and hiking especially because the cold isn't physically exhausting like the heat is. Was born and raised in FL and I was ready to get out of the heat and humidity so this is a good change.
Before I left FL, I fluid filmed the undercarriage and have been rinsing the body and underside off after driving in the slush and slop. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the mid-40's so I plan to properly wash it outside with the pressure washer and I want to take it to a place that applies krown or fluid film since they'll probably do a better job than I could have with aerosol cans. Could care less if it makes everything dirty and greasy if it slows/stops the rust.
