Hey everyone, I am looking for a bug deflector that goes across the hood. I am trying to make it look like it did back in the day. I am located in Alaska so shipping might be a pain but I am trying to beat 400 bucks out of pocket for one on ebay.
I looked for a while, but ended up making one with aluminum angle, aluminum flat, acrylic, machine screws, and tek screws.
The OG sets off the front of the hood, with a slight gap, and brackets offset; mine sat pretty tight to the front of the hood and just behind the grill surround after adjusting it for clearance.
With it tight to the hood and vertical it helped a lot with wind noise, but the windshield washers wouldn’t spray properly because of a low pressure area that was created by the deflector pushing so much wind up and over the cab. It also made the quarter windows much less functional with the back slider on hot days. I pulled it off a few weeks ago actually.
PM me if you want the specs, and I’ll send you my measurements.
Nice truck and nice moose bumper. Yes good luck with finding one, and extra good luck finding one IN Alaska. You might be better off to ask for a 1 lb brick of gold hens teeth and 5 gal bucket of unikorn tears. Places to look are FB MP, Craigslist and or the FTE Alaska chapter. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum152/
I picked up two a couple years ago, plastic has scratches. I paid $5 for them at Fort Antique Mall in Verona, Va. I was gonna use one, but then I reflected on the one that was on the truck when I bought it and how it killed airflow through the cab, so I didn't. Was a spir of the moment purchase. They will kill vents, kill wind wings, miserable hot in the summer.
You might look in flea markets or antique malls, maybe find one but in Alaska .....

Yes your right, I think i found one on ebay for 100 bucks but it is black so i dont know. Neighbor has one on his old chevy but i'm not sure hed sell it to me
Dark blue and a smoke, but I got them so cheap because of scratches ... deep scratches. I bought them to get the aluminum extruded strip that holds the plastic. I really only mentioned them to say, look in those places. I have thought I might cut one down to just protect the hood from stones, etc kicked up, but PPF is a better idea if that's a real concern. I've used dark static cling window tint film too, just applied across front of hood, but it's a short term thing.
Was a red bug shield on my '77 when I bought it in'86, and it was scuffed pretty bad, maybe cracked too, ... so ... in '89 when I had it repainted, etc I changed the plastic from red to a clear lexan. It's an easy change to make, Drove it one day without it and never did put it back. I did not realize was why my truck was so darn hot, had I known I would not have added the AC.
Up there in post #2 is the way. The originals used 4 little "Z" brackets that raised the aluminum up above the grill shell and moved it out a little, and you can bend the plexiglass with heat if you like.
