I'm in the middle of a timging job on my 2009 F150 XLT with a 5.4/ 3V.
I've reinstalled the VCT / VVT housing assemblies onto the cylinder heads. I've also replaced the VCT / VVT housing filter/screens on both the Lt & Rt heads; however, for whatever reason my manual doesn't mention anywhere what the torque value is on the plug that holds the filters in place. Anyone happen to know what the torque is?
I'm thinking i'm just going to have to use best judgement at this point.
Most likely will install the filter then install the plug flush with the top of the housing.
Use LOCTITE 243 sealer when installing the plug and hope it seals the threads and holds it in place.
My main concdern is that I really don't want to crush the filter nor restrict oil movement through it.
I think that’s a good plan. I hate when you buy the service manual so you don’t have to guess, then ultimately end up guessing anyway on something. I was quite surprised not to find the torque for it in there.
I actually didn’t know there were filters in the housing, I knew the solenoid had screens that liked to plug or fall out. You got those filters from Ford?
I did find new filter/screens but not from Ford. Ford parts deptartment couldn't find them in their system. However, they were lsure gurding their loins to sell me the entire assembly for an addition $155.
I found a company AEP that sell the filter baskets for like $10.
Part Number:
Linke for it:
The only reason I found them is because when I removed both heads for machine shop issues I removed the solenoids and their housing assemblies.
While cleaning the oil passages I took out the internal hex plugs and...Merry Christmass, I found them. Both were dirty and one had the little handle at the top broken off.
I went to Ford's, Parts Dept to get it but they couldn't find it in their system.
However, they were sure gurding their loins to sell me the entire VCT housing assembly new at $155 (ea).
For me it wasn't plausable as it would have cost me $310 for both sides.
As a last option I'd of hit up a junk yard for them before I spend that amount.
When I received the new onee I compaired them to the old ones of course.
As far as I can see it's the same part.
That’s a good find, thank you for sharing that info. When they didn’t break down the housing in the manual, I was thinking Ford most likely wouldn’t know anything about those screens, or sell them separate. Honestly if they made a plug to remove and access the screens, they really should sell them separate lol
