Unhappy '00 PS problems

I bought this truck about 2 months ago with 89k on it. Now shows just over 90k, where it has used 3 qts of oil. It started smoking just a bit, but now smokes like a freight train, hot or cold. A friend of mine owns a small shop, so I took it over and he went through it. Said the usual suspects were all OK, but showed low compression on 3 & 6. So, I figured my Ford store would be the place to go. They said the harness into the valve cover is busted and needs to be replaced, parts at $436. They did not do a compression test because they said the airbox latch is broken, which voids the ford warranty. They also suspected some turbo damage.

What should a diesel newbie do?

Thanks-Joe

Was there any warranty from where you purchased. Sounds like a short time to own a vehicle that would cost that much used and be a lemon. I would think a factory rebuilt would be high, maybe a engienout of a late model total? I would sure be questioning the folks that sold the pig as to who is going to pay, I think we already know that, but sometimes we get pleasant suprises. Maybe third opinion? Good Luck.

I could write for HOURS and HOURS of what I went through in purchasing a factory reman engine thru the Stealer. Ten Grand later and after they put in a "Second" supposed high quality Reman in my 97 powerjoke I got rid of it and bought a 2002. The remans you buy thru the Dealer look like they have been painted by a Five year old with a rattle can. I have read other posts on other forums about the exact same issues I had. If you are going to suck it up and spend some money I would look for a very low mileage 7.3 out of a wrecked truck. If I had it to do over again that is what I would do. When I shopped around for a low mileage used I found them to be in the 3000.00 to 4000.00 range. (Of course plus labor to have it installed)Good luck

If you are going to have to squeeze the wallet, go low mileage USED from a reputable wrecking yard, and VERIFIABLE mileage. There is no way I would go with anybody's remanufactured engine. Remember that it was either wore out or broken, and thats why they have the core to remanufacture. Remanufactured is never, ever as good as OEM new, And a 7.3 with 30 or 40 thousand miles is not worn much at all. If you go that route, perhaps you can track the VIN or something to contact the previous owner. He would have no reason at all to lie, and you should be able to get factual history on the motor.

Well Put Terry..............who knows what those remans have been thru in their previous life, and how many miles were on them. The two remans they put in my truck ran like crap. I even stepped up for a new pedastal AND turbo when I had mine replaced and they still had problems.

I touched on a bad subject there didn't I? I should be kicked a little for that. I sold parts on my way thru college at a big rather well known chain. I sold several remans over those years. SOme were good some were terrible. I would have to say this if my truck was where he is at I would go the ultra late model low miles from a salvage yard. I have had great success rebuilding my own engines, would put them up against any engine but to many rebuilds are assemled by folks with minimal skills and maybe less care. Point taken my bad advice. Please don't kick me off the island?

Thanks for the help, guys. I am on my 3rd mechanic. I am not sure what, if anything, the dealer actually did. I found a good private diesel shop and talked to them today. It is passing a TON of unburnt diesel through the tailpipe, apparantly on #'s 3&6. They are hoping its not piston or cylinder because the oil seems fine. He said its unusual for a PS to lose valves, but that is their first guess. Next week they will pull off one head for an inspection and see where to go from there. He said no way for a reman, but he also said nice used PS are really hard to find, and very pricey, plus a job to install in a pickup.

wish me the best.

Joe
