Changed PS Box, Pump now whines a bit. Normal?

1995, F250HD, 460, 4x4

I replaced my sloppy power steering box today with the new redhead unit. The install was pretty uneventful, and went in fairly easy.

Upon refilling the fluid and bleeding, the power steering pump was very, very loud. Very whiny. It got better as I continued to bleed. I had to add more fluid a few times.

It's pretty good now, but still a little bit louder than it was before I changed the box.

Is this normal, will the pump quiet down a bit more as additional air bleeds off through normal driving?

Hopefully. Did you use the correct fluid?

Well, I assumed it took power steering fluid. But reading now I see it likes type F ATF.

To be safe, I will flush and replace with type F.

Ford trucks in my experience have always had power steering that you can hear.

Not sure if you can buy plain type F anymore.

Did you turn wheel full lock to lock several times? Drive it until the fluid gets hot to release any entrained air that might be trapped in the oil?

- ACTUAL FORD TYPE F IS ONLY AVAILABLE FROM MOTORCRAFT -

Amazon Amazon

When bleeding the system, the front of the car should be slightly elevated and do not turn fully to stops as this will aerate the fluid.

20 turns lock to lock with the front wheels elevated should rid the system of air well enough for you to drive it
The noise should go away after ALL the air bubbles are out of the fluid
Go slow on the 20 turns lock to lock
I let the truck run at both stops for a minute as the air bubbles release, that makes it a whole lot easier to purge the system of air

Thanks, all!
I found STP Type F in stock at AutoZone. I'll use that for now.

The whining is better after letting it idle and turning the wheel back and forth a bunch more times. I suspect it's just air and it'll all go away as I drive it. However I likely won't drive until the end of March. I don't drive it in the salt.

Thanks for the replies!

Sure if you are talking about fluid from Ford. The same could be said about MERCON V. I have been using regular and synthetic Type F from other companies for years without any problems.

Air in the system will certainly cause the pump to be louder until the air is bled out.

I wonder why certain types of fluids are called out for certain applications?

FORD ENGINEERING must be confused.

Well, that's your opinion.

FORD is the only fluid to meet the original blend (license). Others are one-fits-all.

And how did MERC V get into the conversation?

I've owned 7 or 8 of the OBS trucks in both half ton and 3/4 ton. 3 of them have had noisy power steering pumps. One of the three (still own) had the PS pump replaced with a new unit at 200K and the new unit was just as loud as the old unit. That truck (F250 4X4) is at 265K miles now and is still as noisy as the day we bought it. We had hoped that the new pump would quiet it down.

I would spin the steering wheel lock to lock a couple times with it up in the air to work out any air - but don't be surprised if it doesn't change a thing.

Oh that's nothing.

Wait till some MO-RON suggests doing a Saginaw conversion & eliminating the noise entirely....

Right, F was it for years and years (old Eaton pumps) and the newer C2 pumps like yours
I get a kick out of some of the dodge specs
Switching fluids? Why?
Just due to the pressure ratings of the pump, and which fluid works the best at that pressure is why the changes
The ZF pumps switched to Mercon when they came out in 92 on Crown Vics with 4.6 motors, same as T birds IIRR
I always used the expensive Ford fluid that I "could use under warranty"
Ford made a whole bunch of different pumps, C2 pumps, some that worked harder Diesel trucks) and some not so hard (Escort / Tempo)
That Ford power steering fluid is F7AZ-3F823-AA
Chassis master 1998, tons of schools on the stuff, this is my recollection of what I was supposed to learn
If you find "new model" books for the year, you will get most of that type of info if you want
