Happy New Year, and may God bless your plans and hopes for the new year. The trails are opening today in our area. Let the winter fun begin. My winter "fun" is a little curtailed at the moment as I'm still recovering from a fall in October. I have another 5 weeks or so before being fully cleared for action. I'm still very thankful and blessed with family around having a good time.
Happy New Year to my FTE Brethren! I hope you all have a good year and that your old Ford gives you no problems and that you can drive it many miles in great weather . If yours is still a project I hope you can drive it this year!
Last night we had a snow squall pass through. It looked like a blizzard with wind driven snow but we only got an inch. I was able to use my backpack blower to clear all the walks. And here I sit with the gas logs on in the fireplace and the smell of pork and sauerkraut coming from the kitchen!
Who else eats pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day?
I don’t think I have but it sounds great. Is a tradition that has a history?
It absolutely does. My parents made sauerkraut every fall and let it ferment in a big, really big crock. By New Years Day it was ready to eat. We had pigs. We didn't butcher them ourselves. Alot of farmers do. We took our pigs to a local butcher shop.
Here is a short history of the tradition.
The history of pork and sauerkraut, especially for New Year's, comes from German immigrants (Pennsylvania Dutch) who brought the tradition to America, symbolizing good fortune, progress (pigs root forward, not backwards like chickens), and wealth (green cabbage/money) for the coming year, rooted in winter hog butchering and cabbage harvests. It became a strong Pennsylvania tradition, representing prosperity and honoring their heritage, often served with mashed potatoes.
