Harbor Freight sells a telescoping (bore) gauge set for $18 but of course you will need calipers to gage the gage to get number. Knowing where to stop based on budget, goal and risk can be a crapshoot. Check width of ring grooves on pistons. I've done a couple budget driveway engine overhauls with success but no question there is some risk.
