Well, got my new to me 1990 F-150 home. 302, 2 wheel drive, AOD, with 3.55 gears. Brown with tan in the middle, tan interior. It is going to need A LOT of work. Body has some rust spots that will need Bondo, I guess. New paint and body work when I finally get everything else done...perhaps to include a new truck-performance-built AOD and a 302 rebuild to focus on towing performance.
Dies when rear tank is tried.
Rough idle, surges.
Voltage gauge fluctuates as it idles...idle seems slow.
Guessing cat is clogged.
Let the games begin...Cha-ching! But not as expensive as a new truck would be. This one is for my youngest son, who turns 16 in 10 years. We have time. :-)
Cool truck, sounds about like my first one, a '93 2wd long bed with 300-6 and AOD. A '90 is a bricknose, not a bullnose, so you might get more help posting in the 87-96 section than in here, but still enjoy reading about it.
I hope the year of the truck you posted was a type-o (1990) as you are in the 80 to 96 truck area.
The 87 - 92? is just above this area.
I also say this as I did not think 80 had a 302 / AOD, well maybe a 302 but AOD?
So if he miss typed 1990 and not 1980 like I thought it still would not have the AOD transmission unless someone did a swap and we know that never happens

How are you going to Bondo rust? That sounds like a recipe for increasing the rate that it rusts. Increasing the strength of the AOD would never be a bad idea.
Only when using the rear tank?
Check for (KOEO) fault codes
Check voltage at the battery with a meter
That would be at the bottom of the list if it even made the list of possible causes

Aww, rats! Clicked the wrong forum and posted! Can mods move this thread?
I love the bullnose trucks, too! Will be cutting wheel well areas out and putting in new panel sections...and Bondo'ing elsewhere where it makes sense.

Why wouldn’t it?
If you look at DaveF post he said the AOD came out in 1981 and you are listing it from 85>
So if the OP had a 1980 truck it would not have a AOD unless someone swapped it in.
But look below it is a 1990 and he posted in the wrong area.

It happens to the best of us.
I am sure when a mod sees this he will move it.
Good luck

True…. If you think the year was mistyped. Stalling when switching to the rear tank make more sense to me as a ‘90 model than an ‘80.
The 80's 5.0 fuel systems confuse me, easy to do, but I would think the rear fuel pump, low or high PSI, would be bad and / or switching valve not working.
Being a 90 model I am guessing it has high PSI in tank pumps so the rear pump or valve is bad would be my guess.
Does the fuel gauge change when you flip the switch may be a clue?
