4wd hub question

Why do the hubs have an "automatic" and a "locked" position? What's the difference? I always thought that if the hubs were automatic, they would automatically lock in when put in 4wd. Saturday, I was in some mud and put it in 4 low with the hubs in the "automatic" position and not much happened. When I got out and locked them, the front engaged. Also, my truck pulled hard to the right for a little while after locking and engaging 4 low. Thank you for your input.

p.s. I have a 2000 F-250 5.4L

4wd hub question

See the FAQ for your answers about the lock feature.

You still need some forward movement to ensure a positive lock on the hubs.

As far as the pulling, sounds likes common thing. Lotsa torque, reduced gearing...the pinion was trying to climb up the ring and it pulled the whole truck a bit.

in the "auto" position the hubs will lock when you turn the ****. you should be stopped when you do this.

in the lock position you can be driving down the road and turn the **** and shift on the fly. so if the side streets are bad and the main roads are clear, you can be driving down a main road, trun on a side street and go into 4x4 without stopping.

The OPPOSITE is true. In fact, you need to be moving, either forward or backward in order for the hubs to engage automatically.

>in the lock position you can be driving down the road and
>turn the **** and shift on the fly. so if the side streets
>are bad and the main roads are clear, you can be driving
>down a main road, trun on a side street and go into 4x4
>without stopping.

This can be done with the hubs in auto as well. Just remember that if the hubs are unlocked and in auto it's going to take approximately 10-20' for the hubs to lock AFTER you turn the switch. If the hubs are already locked manually, the shift to 4X4 is almost instantaneous.

THERE IS NO NEED TO STOP TO SHIFT TO UNLESS SHIFTING INTO 4X4 LOW!

4wd hub question

WAXY is right, when in auto, the hubs will engage when shifted, sometimes if your hubs are hard to turn or dirty, they won't go all the way to the lock position, but if you're moving, it will help to move them into lock.

Definetely only go into 4Low when stopped, I made the foolish mistake of doing it while moving (actually trying to disengage) Not a smart move, it will make ugly moises and not disengage. thank the ESOF gods nothing went wrong!!!

4wd hub question

During our last snow here in S. W. Missouri (8") I was unable to move up my drive on packed snow in 2wd. I stepped on the brake shifted the **** into 4x4 and the front hubs locked as soon as I pressed the accelerator. I thought with the electronic shift I would have to move several feet, but at least with a new truck I have not had to do that (tried it again the next morning, and had the same instant response). So, while supposedly the truck must move a few feet to lock the hubs, I have not found that to be the case.
