Okay...if I have an oil pan leak and they do have to pull the engine, which is what I have been reading here. Does this make for a bad truck? Also....has anybody had any problems associated with the dealership pulling the engine for this problem. I just bought this truck 3 weeks ago it is a 2001 PSD with 50,000 on it! It kind of make me a bit angry...my wife wants to get rid of the truck for this, what do you all think. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! It seems really stupid that you would have to take the engine out to replace a gasket in the oil pan, I have replaced pan gasket on older Cheys and an old Land cruiser before wothout any problems, what was ford thinking?
I just received the word from my mechanic that I have a leak from my '96 250 PSD oil pan because the pan's slicone gasket is bulging. I was quoted $1,200 because it would take 15 hours of labor to remove the engine. Putting aside the insanity of having to pull an engine to replace an oil pan gasket (thanks Ford), has anybody else had this kind of a leak repaired at less time and/or expense??
Make sure it's the oil pan. The Low Volume Oil Pump (LVOP) is often mistaken as the oil pan.
They have to lift the engine off the mounts to get room to remove the pan. It sits right above the cross member. Just went through this myself 2 weeks ago.
I have a 2000 f250 7.3, its got the same issue. I had 3 different techs look at it and its definately the oil pan seal. Jlower, Did you have someone do the work for ya? If so mind if I ask how much it cost. I'd like to avoid a 1200-1600 repair bill if I can. Also I've been hearing that the job can be done by simply loosening the motor mounts and lifting the engine a few inches to get the pan out? Can you confirm this? Would certainly seem easier and cheaper than pulling the whole engine right?
If your guys oil pan gasket is leaking and if your going to replace it ,I would sug spending the extra money and replace the oil pan too! But rust proof it first. most oil pans on the these trucks are rusted.
According to the fatcor sevice manual all you need to do is lift the motor about 4 inches. To do thi syou must disconnect everything as if you were completely removing the motor
Here is an exterpt from the manual after the engine has been disconnected and the tranny mounts removed
Remove the bolts and partially lower the oil pan.
Remove the oil pump screen and pickup tube and spacer and let them drop into the oil pan.
NOTE: To remove the oil pan, position the rear of the pan to the left side of the vehicle and rotate slightly to the right while pulling outward.
I recently found a piston cooling oil jet in my oil pan. Had to pull the motor to remove the pan and bolt new jet in place. I shopped around the Houston area and got six diffrent quotes. 2 for $2650 from the Ford dealers, 2 for $1500 from diesel specialty shops and 2 for $900 from local garages. A client of mine recommended one of the guys that quoted $900. He takes his intire fleet of Ford Diesels to the guy for service and maintance. His has the motor back in the truck and will finish wrapping things up on Monday. Can't wait to get my truck back. I am going to install gauges, 6637, and MBRP, and DP tuner this week.
It is going to be an expensive month for the truck.
AMILLER, any idea how much work / labor is involved in this. I think the shops have quoted me 12 or so hours, but that was with pulling the engine out.....If I can get away with just lifting it a few inches, Im thinking about having a couple mechanic buddies over on a saturday to do it....
Just reading through the procedure I would guess 10 - 12 hours or so there is just so many little things to disconnect. If i had a good mech that would do it for 900 i believe it would be worth it
My pan is leaking around where the dipstick goes into the oil pan. The bolt was loose that held the dipstick tube, we tightened up the bold and siliconed the dog snot out of it, so far soo good.
