96 cruise problems

I have a 96 f250 with a 7.3. My cruise control has been acting strange recently, it won't turn on during normal driving but when I’m towing it turns on and works like it should. My abs sensor is leaky but it seems more like an electrical issue. Any ideas would be great.

The buttons are a common problem
Try "laying" on the buttons
Means
Interrogate with 100 pounds push
The book has you checking resistances out of each switch
The slip rings / sliding contact on the back of the steering wheel on (some models) gets warped and then you can try turning the steering wheel to get the cruise to set
Some airbag clocksprings have the cruise wiring inside them and have no slip rings, not sure about your 1996

I have tried pressing my buttons harder than normal but its still not working. Ill try taking my wheel off later tonight to see how the contacts look but I’m still confused as to why it works with a trailer connected but won’t without a trailer. I saw another forum talking about their cruise not working but no one said anything about the trailer.

You do not have LED tail light bulbs correct?
We used to check for a horn and brake lamps at the first part of any cruise control diagnosis
Maybe the processor is not seeing the brake lamp circuit until you hook up a trailer

Have you tried to engage the cruise while on a freeway cloverleaf?
My old 94 van absolutely would not engage the cruise with the steering wheel exactly straight
I had to be turning either way just slightly, and it would take and set

Since it works with trailer connected, I doubt the problem is with the clock spring/wheel buttons.

Do all your brake/tail/signal lights work correctly without the trailer attached?
Also, the third brake light cab mounted working correctly?

I haven’t tried on the clover leaf but it engages just fine when going straight with the trailer.

As for all of my lights working correctly, I just checked and the third light is not working. What are some common causes of that?

wwhite is on the right track.

The cruise control will not work if the brake lights are on. It detects if they are on when the ground goes away on the brake light wire [ie, power is applied]. If the bulbs are burnt out, the ECU believes the brakes are on. With a trailer, there may be enough load on the trailer wiring for the cruise ECU to see the ground.

My money is with wwhite.

Most electrical problems are. Bad ground usually.
You either have a burned out bulb, or shorted socket.

Put a low watt bulb in the third brake light. People put high watt bulb in, and the heat up and melt the plastic.

I once spent 8 hours fixing a cruise issue. I put in every part in the system and it still did not not work. I was stumped and eventually figured out all the brake light bulbs were out. WTF? It was getting power when the brake pedal was applied. Then I learned that the ECU is not looking for power, but ground. The ground goes away when the power is applied. All those parts were removed. There were several different new parts installed too. All those 'Shop Tested' parts were put back into stock. The parts manager was not happy, but he knew I was not some clown and had a good laugh. He did buy me a beer at the end of the day.

I lost all that time. You can't charge 'diagnose and replace' brake light bulbs so that was a class in the school of hard knocks that was memorable. Never ever again.

I have cruise again after replacing the third light bulb. Is cruise supposed to turn off when I turn my blinker on? That happened a couple times when changing lanes but I had to fix turn selector a while back so it might just be something wrong with that.

Interesting, I'll test mine tonight.

Glad you got it working again.

My 95 F250 does not turn off cruise when the turn signals are on.

Bulbs all tend to have a similar lifespan. When one brake bulb goes out, I would replace them all as a set. While you are there, replace the tail light bulbs too. Get the right old school bulbs and forget about the LED versions. They are cool, but not worth the hassle they bring.
