TLDR; everyone with say on a 1995 truck my VSS is on my diff right? OK, I believe that , but what is the sensor on my T-Case output shaft?
Backstory: I have a 1982 F350 and I'm working on swapping in a 95 aeronose drivetrain and interior into it.
The truck currently has the 82 axle in the rear (without the VSS pickup or tone ring)
I'm trying to find the best way to get my 90s dash with electronic speedo to work. (Its my understanding the 82s would have been a cable driven speedo)
From the research I did everyone seems to be adamant that the 95s had the VSS pickup on the rear end and there there is not and never was a pickup on the Tcase. (BW1356)
There is very clearly some sort of pickup with a plug on the rear section of my transfer case and I'm was wondering what it is for.
Also, does anyone know how many pulses per rev that pickup produces? If its within range I may be able to use that (with possible modification) to drive my speedo.
Electronic shift BW1356 transfer case has a speed sensor on the output shaft for the speed input to the 4wd shift control module. It is not used for the engine/drivetrain computer (aka PCM).
That was my thought too, but my transfer case has the manual lever on it.
Could it have been converted?
Also, without knowing exactly how the speed from that sensor is related to wheel speed just yet, I would guess the PPR of sensor in the tcase would be less then that one in the rear end.
Is there enough head room in the tire size recalibration that I could effectively wire that signal like the one from the diff and just recalibrate my tire size accordingly?

Given the age, may have been converted somewhere along the way.

I would assume the same thing.

No idea what the pulses-per-mile are at the output of that speed sensor. A PSOM or some other aftermarket converter may be able to be programmed for it.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if your transfer case speed sensor ran the speedo on your 1995
I'd remove it from the t case and twist the cable to see if the speedo needle moves
The drive gear inside the t case used to get worn down and the speedo becomes inop
Same with the driven gear on the end of the cable
Those drive gears inside the case get worn down into a "U" shape
You can stick your finger in the hole and see if the gear is flat like it should be or concaved like it shouldn't be

I would since there is no cable driven speedometer after the ‘91 model year. What would not surprise me is if the original transfer case was replaced with an earlier model that had a cable driven speedometer and speed sensor for the speed control.
I no longer have the '95 to know, it was just a drivetrain doner and was long gone before I received the '82.
Also, based on the harness from the '95, it did use the rear end VSS pickup.
The reason for my OP was to find another solution for the the lack of VSS on the 1982 rear axle.
